Get JazzEd Up!

Don’t miss out on this Jazz Education Workshop taking place at the U of S Department of Music from May 12th to May 15th.

Limited enrolment! Get Jazzed Up! is open to saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, vibraphone, bass, and drum set players in grades 9 – 12 who are participants is their school’s curricular and/or extra-curricular jazz program.

Please note there is a $25 registration fee for this workshop.

Participants must pre-register here!

Participants must attend all scheduled events.

Teachers who are interested in Getting Jazzed Up by sitting in on any of Saturday’s events are welcome to do so at no charge. If you are interested, please contact by no later than May 12th.

Tentative Schedule of Events

Thursday, May 12
6:45 PM – 8:45 PM:

Students will be split into two jazz bands, directed by Nick Fanner & Paul Suchan, to begin rehearsing the program for Sunday’s concert.

Friday, May 13
Free admission to the 7:30 PM Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra’s Fab 4 And More: Beatles for Big Band concert at the Broadway Theatre.

Saturday, May 14
9:00 AM: Big Band rehearsals
10:45 AM: Instrumental Masterclasses featuring:

  • Sheldon Corbett - Saxophone
  • Dean McNeill - Trumpet
  • Erika Rybinski - Trombone
  • Graham Tilsley - Guitar
  • Paul Suchan - Piano/Vibraphone
  • Sorren Nissen - Bass
  • Luke Newman - Drums

11:45 AM: Lunch break (please note that due to the pandemic, students are expected to bring their own bag lunch that day).
12:30 PM: Staff Combo Concert
1:15 PM: Band “A” Sectionals / Band “1” Improvisation
1:50 PM: Band “1” Sectionals / Band “A” Improvisation
2:25 PM: Break
2:45 PM: Big Band Rehearsals
4:00 PM: Home time!

Sunday, May 15
11:00 AM: Final/dress rehearsal (Pack a snack!)
1:00 PM: wrap up concert in Quance Theatre*

About the SYJO

The Saskatoon Youth Jazz Orchestra is the SJO's companion orchestra consisting of up-and-coming, student-aged musicians. Directed by Nick Fanner, the SYJO is composed of musicians selected each year following an auditions process held in the early fall. The orchestra regularly performs at SJO concerts as well as the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.
