Announcing the SJO's 2023-2024 concert season!

Join the SJO for another year of incredible live jazz experiences! We’re calling this season:

We couldn’t be more excited to announce all the concerts we have in store for you over the next year. This season’s programming is designed to honour the luminaries of jazz while showcasing the modern versatility of this timeless art form.

With a diverse array of themes, artists, and influences, the we look forward once again to bringing our concerts to you LIVE at the Broadway Theatre — but we also have a few other tricks (and venues) up our sleeves this year, which we’ll tell you about later on.

For now, here’s a quick overview of what’s in store:

The Hyperbolic Band: Sounds from a Quantum Future - Friday, September 20, 2023 @ Convocation Hall

Join us in Convocation Hall on the U of S campus for a free concert! We’re delving into the intersection of music and mathematics. In this innovative concert, the SJO collaborates with Dr. Steven Rayan and composer Jeff Presslaff, translating hyperbolic geometry research into jazzy musical compositions, supplemented by a unique ensemble including a string quartet, oboe, and bassoon.


When the Spirit Moves You: Ellington’s Sacred Music (ft. Dee Daniels & Fred Stride) - Saturday, October 14, 2023 @ the Broadway Theatre

Dive into the soulful melodies of jazz greats like Ellington with the remarkable Dee Daniels and the Aurora Voce mixed choir. Under the baton of Fred Stride, this evening promises a rejuvenation of classics with contemporary flair.


My Favourite Things: The Nutcracker Suite & More! - Saturday, December 16, 2023 @ the Broadway Theatre

Tap into your warm and fuzzy holiday spirit with a jazz twist on a timeless classic, Ellington and Stayhorn's Nutcracker Suite. Accompanied by the enchanting voice of Saskatoon’s own Tatrina Tai, the evening promises to once again bring forth a delightful and soulful blend of tradition and innovation.


A Night to Remember - Sunday, December 31, 2023 @ TCU Place

Celebrate New Year's Eve with us once again on a night of jazzy elegance. The full SJO ensemble will be joined by vocalists Jessica Robbinson, Alexis Normand, and Graham Dyck to bring you an unforgettable evening filled with exquisite dining and dancing. Whether it's a romantic outing, a gathering with loved ones, or a solo adventure, the night promises a an unforgettable New Year's Eve experience.


A Kolomyika Fantasy - Saturday, March 9, 2024 @ the Broadway Theatre

Join us on a special cultural voyage celebrating Ukrainian heritage. This concert will feature works of poetry by Taras Shevchenko set to original jazz compositions and featuring vocalists Slavko Nohas and Kateryna Khartova, alongside the dynamic tenor saxophonist Jerrold Dubyk. This concert is both a tribute to the profound influence of Ukrainian art on our cultural and musical mosaic here in Canada, and also a chance for us to help raise funds for the Ukrainian Museum of Canada here in Saskatoon.


Michael Brecker: Ode to a Tenor Titan (Ft. Jim Brenan) - Saturday, April 27, 2024 @ the Broadway Theatre

We’re paying homage to “Tenor Titan” Michael Brecker with a unique showcase featuring the talents of renowned Canadian saxophonist, Jim Brenan. Look forward to a deep into Brecker's influential legacy through the lens of the big band ensemble with a contemporary touch.


Flutter By, Butterfly: A Tribute to Kenny Wheeler - Friday, June 8, 2024 @ the Broadway Theatre

We’ll be ending our regular season a high note by honouring one of the unique Canadian voices in the jazz ensemble space. Kenny Wheeler's iconic compositions will be celebrated in this grand finale, promising a memorable experience for all attendees.
