A Symphony of Heritage: Ukrainian poetry meets jazz in A Kolomyika Fantasy!

About This Concert

Step into a captivating musical world with "A Kolomyika Fantasy," a concert presented by the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra (SJO) to help raise awareness of the ongoing war in Ukraine, and to help keep Ukrainians at home, here in Canada, and abroad in our hearts and minds. We'd also like to show our support for the Ukrainian Museum of Canada in Saskatoon by encouraging concert goers and SJO patrons to donate to them directly.

This extraordinary musical experience will feature an all-star lineup of Ukrainian-speaking Canadian vocalists including Slavko Nohas and Kateryna Khartova, alongside the dynamic tenor saxophonist Jerrold Dubyk. Saskatoon-based concert pianist Sofia Mycyk will also be joining us on stage.

Scheduled for March 9 to coincide with the birthdate of the renowned Ukrainian poet, Taras Shevchenko, this concert will be a unique blend of art and culture. We will honour Shevchenko's poetic legacy by setting some of his poetry to original and respectfully crafted jazz compositions, offering a special new and musically inspired perspective on his timeless works.  For more info on Shevchenko visit this website.

The concert program extends beyond Shevchenko's poetry, delving into the rich Ukrainian musical tradition. We will be reimagining original and traditional Ukrainian songs, infusing them with jazz interpretations to create a unique and innovative sonic experience.

Join us for this musical journey as we celebrate Ukrainian heritage, intertwine cultures, and support the Ukrainian Museum of Canada. Contributions to the museum can be made through this link:

Together, let's celebrate Ukraine’s special contribution to our arts and music community, and work to keep our shared heritage vibrant and accessible for generations to come.
