We are closing Shadows, Lights & New Horizons where its title points, with a musician whose whole career has been about writing for large ensembles and then playing the daylights out of the result.
Marshall Gilkes is one of the leading trombonists in contemporary jazz and one of its most sought-after writers. His Grammy-nominated recordings with Germany's renowned WDR Big Band put both halves of that on record, and he brings the same combination to Saskatoon.
The evening opens with the Saskatoon Brass Band, with Gilkes as featured soloist. After the interval he takes the stage with the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra (SJO) for a programme of his own compositions and arrangements.
We hope you will join us for a night that looks squarely at where this music is headed next.
